Stein Tønnesson

Stein Tønnesson is an Asia researcher at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), the editor for Asian affairs in the Journal of Peace Research, and a member of the editorial board for Global Asia. His research areas include peace and conflict in East Asia, nation-building in Southeast Asia, conflicts in the South China Sea, revolution and war in Vietnam, and the role of social media in internal conflicts in Myanmar. From 2011 to 2017, Tønnesson led the research program Peace in East Asia at Uppsala University and published the monograph “Explaining the East Asian Peace” (NIAS Press 2017). From 2018 to 2021, he led two projects on armed groups and social media in Myanmar in partnership with the Myanmar Institute for Peace and Security (MIPS). The first article from this collaboration was published in the Journal of Contemporary Asia in 2021: ‘Pretending to be States: The Use of Facebook by Armed Groups in Myanmar.
